The Silent Sage of Tiruvannamalai – Sri Ramana Maharshi – The Rshi of all Rshis!
Sri Ramana Maharshi as a Young Lad !
Even before he attained puberty, as young as a 16 year old boy, the silent sage of Tiruvannamalai-Sri Ramana Maharshi attained self-realization by voluntarily forcing a death experience scene on himself.
The description about his death experience in his own words, has been documented and has been permanently displayed in Sri Ramanaashramam itself. Mere reading of this text gives a shiver for people who can fathom the depth of this experience. The souls who are ready for his teachings alone seem to understand and appreciate his teachings.
After realizing his Self at the tender age of 16, Bhagavan Sri Ramana was in a state of bewilderment as to what had happened to him. He could only understand and feel the strong presence of pleasantness and undying happiness within him. He was still was not able to decipher what had happened to his consciousness. He thought he had been possessed by something. He never shared his experience with anyone and tried to live an ordinary mundane life like other school boys. Later he miserably failed in paying an attention to his school activities and his elder brother who was his caretaker at that point of time, started to reprimand him for his careless attitude towards his studies.
It then dawned upon him that he can no longer pretend to be normal and wanted to take solace in Lord Arunachala, who he declared as his guru and just ran away from his home in Madurai to Tiruvannamalai and settled there for good. September 2nd was the day he had reached Tiruvannamalai and till date all his devotees celebrate this da as Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi’s Advent day in Tiruvannnamalai.
Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi’s Teachings!
The enlightenment that he got was so solid and profound that he had paved a new way to the attainment of Self-Realization in human consciousness. He has clearly mentioned that his ashram is a welcome home for all those souls that has been through a lot of religious rituals, yogic practices and finally looking for the sure shot and quick means to Self-Realization.
The silent sage of Tiruvannamalai – Sri Ramana Maharshi, has given us such high confidence and assurance for Self- Realization that he even went to the extent of rephrasing the famous Nandanar’s song called “Ayye Metha Kadinam” song to “Aye Athi Sulabham”. A ripe soul ready to attain Self Realization and is quite ready to give up on worldly desires clings to Sri Ramana with such ease. Sri Ramana has promised to mankind that even if he take one glass of water to drink from someone, he shall ever be indebted to them and grace them.
He has also explicitly declared that whoever comes to his presence will never be abandoned by him as entering his zone is as good as getting caught into the mouth of a tiger. One cannot but be devoured by him. Such is the nature of his promise to his devotees and to souls that are serious about the path of Self Realization.
Most of his teachings were imparted in silence. He himself said that he imparts knowledge through Silence. Hence he was considered as a reincarnation of Lord Dakshinamoorthy. Sri Ramana Maharshi, once had completed a half written Sanskrit poem by his follower, in which he himself had declared that he is the Lord Karthikeyan.
Bhagavan’s Best Message to the Humanity!
Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi remained in extreme silence for years to come by after he came to Tiruvannamalai. He remained in Paathaala Linga in Lord Arunachala Temple for several years. He hardly ate anything for years together. His body was tasted by termites and mice. He still did not budge an inch from the Lord’s presence. It was Sri Seshadri Natha Swamigal (who was a reincarnation of a devotee called Abiraama bhattar), who took him out of the Paathaala lingam and bathed him, fed him some food.
Later after several years of severe tapas in silence like this, he started to speak. His first break in silence was for the sake of Sri Kaavya Kanta Ganapathi Muni. He gave some upadesa to him and helped him attain the profound spiritual state that Sri Ganapathi Muni had been longing for several years.
The famous quote of Sri Ramana Maharshi is:
“Whatever is destined not to happen will not happen, try as you may. Whatever is destined to happen will happen, do what you may to prevent it. This is certain. The best course, therefore, is to remain silent.”
This was his message for his own mother when she wanted him to come back for good from Tiruvannamalai to Madurai. And this is the message for the whole of humanity as well from the divine incarnate – Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi.
